The Commonality Center

One true thing.

What we do

Our mission is to intentionally foster visibility of underserved members of rural communities through research, education, wellness, and deep connections achieved through creative writing scenarios.

The Commonality Center began just before the holidays of 2022, and throughout 2023 TCC worked to bring community members living on the margins together through writing and creativity. And while writing and the creative process with pen and paper will always be the heart of our programs, our mission has developed and grown into new and often overlooked areas of the community.

All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence you know."

- Ernest Hemingway

The sessions

Processing in the open makes us visible to each other. Processing our physical and mental illnesses, traumas, challenges, questions, as well as our concealed gifts, dreams, and visions together make us understood and valued. When we engage this way—in therapeutic writing sessions, resume building workshops, and wellness enhancing sessions—we’re no longer living in the margins.

Through these innovative programs, TCC invites anyone to fearlessly walk their own circuitous path with emotional and cognitive intelligence, playfulness, and creativity as we discover who we are with grace and peace. We do these activities together in safety—actively ready to improve ourselves and our well-being.

Something no one can ever take away from you is your narrative.

Write it like you mean it.

octopus & labrynth

The labyrinth was first represented in ancient mythology as a device used to contain a wild beast. Later, the labyrinth evolved to be incorporated into spiritual practices—as a way to embrace mystery and enhance meditation and clear thought.

The octopus is intelligent, emotional, curious, playful, solitary, and cleverly evasive. It has the ability to heal itself, and its extraordinary form has a propensity to engage with its environment like no other animal.

These two images combine to reflect our community’s nature and bravery as we each work toward being more fully who we are meant to be and strengthen what we possess and what we can offer others.
